classics is the integrated study of the language, literature, art, society, history, and thought of the ancient greeks and romans. in classics, we draw on a variety of approaches in order to develop a multi-faceted view of greek and roman culture--for that reason, classics is an multi-disciplinary discipline, combining the methods and insights of philology, literary analysis, archaeology, religion, anthropology, history, and philosophy. the overarching goal of the classics program is two-fold: to introduce students to the languages, literature, and cultures of greek and roman antiquity, and to help students develop the skills necessary to interpret, synthesize, and engage ancient material.
